REEL WORLD Vol.6 – # 18 Sophie Gilfillan (Canada)
Follow Canadian ripper Sophie Gilfillan throughout 2021 paddling in Ecuador, Canada, Chile, and the US. « I honestly had no idea what was in store for this year. My world had been flipped upside down and each day was a wildcard. I was presented with the opportunity to travel with World Class and leapt at it, ever since I have been hooked on every aspect of kayaking whether that be creeking, freestyle or slalom. Each discipline teaching me valuble lessons about another I got to learn how every aspect of whitewater kayaking is linked together in the end. My year started off in Ecuador where I first sat in a creek boat, also where I landed my first freewheel and became the third woman to land a tomahawk. by the time I left Ecuador I had seven weeks of creek boating experience under my belt and was hungry for more. I went on to paddle in Washington and California for six weeks and finish up my sophomore year of high school. after school I went across the country and stayed in Charlotte North Carolina where I ran several southeast classics including the Green river narrows, the Ocoee, and the Cheoah. soon enough it was time to head back home to Canada for the summer where I would get back in my freestyle kayak and slalom boat for three months. After learning several new tricks and qualifying for the final slalom World Cup in Europe I was ready to go back to creeking. I started my fall in Ecuador where I got to visit rivers I had ran earlier that year and be able to feel how much I had progressed in such a short amount of time. Finally I went to Chile to finish off the year. Chile provided a new style of kayaking and so many fun new opportunities. I am endlessly grateful for everything that has fallen into place this year and even more grateful for the people who helped me along the way, 2021 was a good one, see you soon 2022!
