2018 Pink Water Challenge, June 8-10th
Big water, burly waves and seemingly endless opportunities to explore has put Northern Quebec on the international whitewater hit list. But paddling this ‘promise land’ can be exciting yet intimidating place. One group of local whitewater women are working to make kayaking in the Lac-Saint-Jeanregion more accessible for international female paddlers but also local ladies.
The 2018 Pink Water Challenge with be held on the Mistassibi, Métabetchouan, Ashuapmushuan and Péribonka Rivers and will be the fourth annual Pink Water event. This year’s event will take place from June 8-10, 2018 and promised to be a jam-packed weekend of ladies-only whitewater with on-water instruction, off-water extras like yoga and massage therapy, workshops, food and festivities.
There are multiple packages that women to can choose from, each focusing on a different aspect of whitewater paddling including kayak, canoe or raft and river boarding. Each package includes meals, shuttles, some equipment rentals, camping or chalet accommodation, massage therapy, yoga and photography. There will be door prizes and parties, bonfires and time for additional activities like canyoning, climbing and hiking.
Pink Water was founded in 2013 when two Quebec ladies identified a common interest in whitewater, as well as a lack of female participation. The first Pink Water Challenge was held in 2014 with 70 women in attendance, growing to over 300 people involved in the 2015 and 2016 event. In 2017 Pink Water gathered ambassadors from all over the world to paddling Quebec and collaborate on the direction the registered NGO would take which will include international events in the future.
Pink water ultimately wants to mobilize women from around the world over the common element; whitewater.
