2018 Snowy River Extreme Race (Australia)

« Snowy River Extreme Race turns it on for fun and thrills »

River paddlers from across Australia and overseas descended to Island Bend in Kosciuszko National Park on 29-30 September to celebrate and participate in the annual Snowy River Extreme Race (SRER).

The SRER is a whitewater race held on the Snowy River below Guthaga Dam that consists of teams of two racing over a short section of river on either expert (grade 4) or intermediate (grade 3) water.

This year marked the third running of the SRER and race organisers were thrilled with more than 200 paddlers registering for the event.

SRER spokesperson Johannes Hendriks praised the efforts of all involved and said due to popular demand the race had now grown to include a « junior » and « women’s » class.

« It’s fabulous to see the SRER go from strength to strength and to showcase whitewater kayaking as a fun, social and recreational sport », said Brian Kilby of Random Adventure Gear

While fine and sunny conditions prevailed over the weekend, the four degree water temperature and light snow falls at camp kept competitors well rugged up.

The Snowy Mountains region boasts some of Australia’s best whitewater destinations with world class paddling on the Thredbo, Eucumbene, Murrumbidgee and Indi (Upper Murray) Rivers. Generally speaking, the best time for paddling is during the spring thaw from September to November.
