Wairoa Race, New Zealand, February 2026

The Wairoa Extreme Race is New Zealand’s longest-running whitewater kayaking race—and it never fails to deliver world-class action. Based in the stunning Kaimai Range in the Bay of Plenty, this iconic event draws an incredible lineup of talented paddlers from across New Zealand and around the globe.

This year, the weather kept everyone on their toes. High flows for Saturday’s time trial forced a quick course change, raising the stakes right from the start by shifting the race to the legendary “Bottom Waterfall” on the Wairoa River. With a powerful 80 cumecs—five times the usual release flow—the river transformed into a fast, pushy, and highly dynamic racecourse. Massive features, surging currents, and sticky holes demanded precision, confidence, and commitment from every athlete.

Epic vibes on the riverside.

After an epic day on the water, competitors and supporters gathered riverside for a well-earned celebration. With camping on-site, live DJs, and plenty of stories shared under the night sky, Saturday night delivered the perfect mix of energy and camaraderie.

Sunday brought the highly anticipated head-to-head showdown; this year’s battleground was “Mother’s Nightmare,” a steep and technical Class IV rapid also on the Wairoa. The racing was fierce and incredibly tight, with dramatic sprints, split-second moves, and plenty of heart-stopping moments. Spectators were treated to thrilling battles and finishes.

The Wairoa Race once again proved why it remains a highlight of New Zealand’s paddling calendar, leaving everyone eager for next year.
