Zamora: First Descent River Expeditions in Ecuador
Zamora is a film about the pursuit of first descent river expeditions in Ecuador. In addition to the country’s classic rivers that Ecuador is known for, numerous unfamiliar river canyons hide deep in the jungle between the Andes and the Amazon. For years, Todd Wells and Galen Volckhausen had dreamed of paddling the Rio Mulatos in Central Ecuador. They tried and failed once, then returned only to bail again. Next, they attempted to paddle the Rio Coangos in the Cordillera del Condor in Southern Ecuador. This time, cultural tension from a border war with Peru, decades of mining exploration and development, and a fierce Shuar indigenous community at the headwaters of the river kept them from completing a descent. At the end of their trip, they stumbled upon the Rio Zamora and ended up discovering one of the most wild, powerful and challenging sections of river either of them had ever ventured through.
