Himalayan Freestyle Championships

Himalayan Freestyle Kayak Championships, April 10th, Trishuli River, Nepal

Some of you are already heading to Nepal to paddle during the spring season. You don’t care about facing the consequences of the earthquakes that hit the country a year ago or those of the Indian recent (and now over) blockade at Nepali borders. In fact you just love this country, right? – no matter if you have already been there or if it’s still on your bucket list. You surely want to help its people to rebuild their tourism industry by paddling your dream destination.

And you’re damn right!

You’re also super lucky because we have the best last minute surprise for you: the first ever edition of the Himalayan Freestyle Kayak Championships will be held on April 10th on the Trishuli River. The place is one of the most iconic in Nepal. Generations of local safety kayakers and rafting guides have grown up on its banks and today more than 90% of paddlers community’s members come from the area. The event is organized by the Nepal Kayak Club (see below), which has already been featured in our pages. “We’re so proud to see our young boys pulling some big tricks on the book of freestyle kayaking. Don’t miss out this event if you’re looking for an escape from town or are curious about what it’s all about!” said Anup Gurung, the president of NKC, after he came back from a short trip on the Trishuli River to test the event’s hole. Some young paddlers are apparently already pulling McNasty one after the other there, so you better join them quick and train hard with the local crowd! The competition will host one Open Category. However more categories will be opened if women and juniors (under 18) reached the number of at least 5 participants. 50 000 NPR in total prize will be offered to the winners. To join, participants will have to pay the super low fee of 10 NPR. It’s not a joke! The Nepal Kayak Club just wants to give the 2016 kayaking season a fresh and happy start and gathers as many paddlers as possible to enjoy the river all together! So pack your gear, warm your shoulders and come!

The Nepal Kayak Club

The NKC has been created in 2011 as a non-profit organization committed to promoting education, certification, skills development, professionalism and opportunities for Nepal’s whitewater community. The club aims to act as community meet-up point and to help young Nepali kayakers hone their natural talent and progress into world-class kayakers, certified instructors and guides. So far 55 members have joined the NKC, from Nepal but also from abroad, coming from 8 different countries such as France, Canada, Iceland, United Kingdom, France, USA etc. In 2015, the NKC recieved the Paddle For Purpose Award from Canoe & Kayak Award. It came as a great reward for the long-term achievements of the club but also for the missions it organized in remote Nepal to help people affected by earthquakes that hit our country in April and May 2015.
