Ganga Kayak Festival 2014 – Rishikesh India (March 5th/ 6th)

The 2nd Annual Ganga Kayak Festival is being held on 5&6 March in Rishikesh India. This International kayak competition was the first kayak competition to be held in India in 2013. Originally designed to encourage and introduce more Indian paddlers to the sport of kayak competitions it is also open to international competitors and is quickly becoming a true international festival.

Rishikesh is at the forefront of adventure water sports in the country and the team leading this festival are international kayak competitors themselves as well as professional international kayak guides and instructors from Rishikesh. They have come together to create a truly professional level competition and festival. The team has formed their own organization called TASS – The Adventure Sports Society. This is the organization leading the festival.

The Ganga river is one of the largest and most powerful rivers in the world and the area near Rishikesh holds some exciting class 3 and 4 rapids.  The festival consists of three competitions; Boater Cross, Down River Race and Mass Boater Cross. All three competitions are for professional level kayakers. There are also two separate categories for beginners and women in the Down River Race only. The competitions will be held on the Golf Course rapid, one of the fastest and most challenging rapids on the river Ganga. The venue is set up on a beach front area surrounded by the forested hills of the Garhwal mountain range, a beautiful place for spectators and competitors alike.

Rishikesh is in the state of Uttarakhand in Northern India at foothills of the Himalayan mountain range. This region of India is surrounded by some of India’s most pristine natural environments. There are plenty of hidden and not so hidden rivers, streams and waterfalls within a short distance from Rishikesh. Further, it can be considered a gateway to the higher more northern Himalayas where there are even more opportunities for true white water kayaking and amazing natural beauty. A trip to Rishikesh is an open door to even more adventure and there are plenty of first descents waiting for boaters to explore.

The two day festival will also include local Indian food vendors, kayak gear suppliers and end with a live music event. The event will showcase India and the River Ganga as a premier kayak destination as well as provide fun and excitement for both the competitor and spectator alike.

The Rishikesh area has many options for lodging including beach and adventure camps. If you are coming for the festival and require lodging, accommodation or wish to see more of what this region has to offer contact the Ganga Kayak Festival team at info@gangakayakfestival.org  Options for further travel packages are also available.
