The extreme kayaking Italian Cup (Coppa Italia di Kayak d’Alto Corso) is a wild water sprint race. Organized by AlpinAction this year, the first stage took place for the second time on the rapids of the river Tagliamento on April 18th. It will be followed throughout the season - until October on the rivers Sermenza, Toce, Aurino and Nera.
Tagliamento is a spectacular river, which runs through Forni di Sotto in the North-East Italian Dolomites. Though in the late spring, banks were still covered with snow. The competition section was about 400 meters long with rapids of WW4 difficulty. It was entirely visible by the spectators from the banks of the river and from the bridge Sacrovint. At all the difficult spots safety was guaranteed by professional rescuers.
As all the competitions in Italian Cup, this one was also opened to foreigners and amateurs.
Nevertheless, it was a perfect opportunity to see and meet some of the best paddlers, as well as many former slalom competitors. Categories were women's and men's general and besides 7 others regarding the age (under 35, under 40, over 40, over 45, over 50, over 55 and over 60).
After a short briefing of the organization committee and the competitors, the freeride battle began. Each competitor paddled only once, so the competition went very fast, without any breaks. The absolute men and women’s results are shown below.
Results [men]:
1. Dejan Kraj (Slovenia)
2. Thomas Waldner (Italia)
3. Andraz Krpic (Slovenia)
Results [women]:
1. Satu Vänskä-West Garth (Finland)
2. Zagnoni Giulia (Italy)
3. Mojca Jenko (Slovenia)
After the ceremony with prices and cups has ended, there was a nice dinner at the Fishing Association’s house in Forni di Sotto, which continued to a friendly gathering in a cosy environment.
