2015 Derby du Veneon (DDV), the longer the better!

On September 12th (next week end…) will take place the now annual end of summer rendez vous for creekers in europe: The Derby du Vénéon, on the Vénéon river, near Grenoble in the stunning National Park of the Ecrin – a place painted by god.

Race Format

Competitors start in teams of three paddlers. They must have a complete safety equipment to descend to La Bérarde Champhorent. This course brings together all facets of the high river navigation: challenging rapids of IV / V class, compulsory lines, a portage and a quick V where you have to go one by one.

The Chrono starts when the first team member passes the start line and stops when the last reaches the finish line.

The history of the Derby

Derby Vénéon was born from a passion for mountain sports and river Vénéon. After countless runs on this magical river, organizers realized that this valley deserved its annual whitewater event. Inspired by the ski Derbys (mass and extreme events) , including the famous Derby de La Grave, the derby is an extreme kayak race the longest in the world, and with a race format and team physical and technical requirements that is not  seen anywhere else!

Race Course: Bérarde-Champhorent

From La Bérarde (a mecca for hiking and mountaineering), to the Roman bridge of Champhorent, a finish line of thousands of years old …

It is a legendary whitewater run for european creekers.

It is a steep and continuous run, committing, especially with below 10C° water. The water comes down from the glacier which gives us at least a minimum level of water each year. Depending on the temperature of the night before, the water can reach a higher level and the show is all the best!
